# Calculus II — conversion review

Course: MATH 138, Robert Andre, Winter 2004, University of Waterloo. The source title block is signed `bh2smith@gmail.com` but has no explicit author name; the reading page preserves that signature rather than inventing an author declaration.

## Original evidence

The original LaTeX and 41-page PDF are preserved in `originals/calculus-ii/`, with revision IDs and SHA-256 hashes. PDF bytes were verified against Dropbox's content hash on download. The LaTeX matches the previously inspected inventory copy. No Dropbox file or original byte was changed.

## Repairs and checks

- Source line 541 contains `\-` before pi/2. Pandoc rejects it; in the original PDF (page 14, example 13 item 3) it prints nothing. A single exact, count-checked conversion-only replacement removes that command. HTML therefore retains the PDF's `pi/2 ≤ theta ≤ pi/2`, even though the mathematical lower bound should be negative. This is an existing source typo, not a silent correction.
- Preserve independent global counters: 21 theorems, 47 examples, 6 definitions, 2 remarks, 1 proposition, 1 corollary and 1 lemma. All 79 labels matched the PDF: 75 by extracted-text comparison and the four extraction-disrupted labels visually on PDF pages 6, 8, 32 and 35.
- Restore nine equation numbers from source order, corresponding to PDF labels (1)–(9). Resolve the two existing equation references to (3) and (9), with local links.
- Source-based checks cover 12 sections, 33 subsections, 14 proof environments, 2 tables, and zero footnotes. The repaired conversion contains 1,062 MathML nodes, no Pandoc warnings, no MathML errors, no duplicate IDs and no unresolved references.
- Visual PDF review sampled pages 6, 7, 8, 14, 32 and 35, focusing on counters, the repaired expression and the fundamental theorem equation. This was not a line-by-line mathematical audit of every formula in the 41 pages.

## Limitations

This is a historical reading edition. Existing mathematical typos remain, including the inequality above; consult the original PDF and use judgment when studying. HTML reflows the original pagination, multicolumn layout and typography. Supplementary Calculus II files are not part of this main-course import. Linear Algebra II is available as a separate reviewed reading edition.

## Launch review, 22 October 2026

At 390px, long inline formulas in the power-series material caused page-wide overflow (414px document width). The converter now wraps inline MathML in an HTML span that scrolls when needed; all mathematical markup remains unchanged. Browser checks confirmed a 390px document width and scrollable long formulas. The original PDF panel expands/collapses, and the downloaded PDF matches the preserved original byte-for-byte.
